Kottiyoor Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples in Kerala, located amidst the lush forests and river valleys of the Western Ghats in Kannur district. Often called “Dakshina Kashi” (Varanasi of the South), the temple is deeply connected to the legend of Daksha Yaga, where Goddess Sati sacrificed herself after being insulted by her father Daksha. It is believed that Lord Shiva’s immense grief and anger following this event sanctified the land of Kottiyoor.
A unique feature of Kottiyoor is that it consists of two temple complexes situated on opposite banks of the Bavali River. The permanent shrine, known as Ikkare Kottiyoor (Vadakkeshwaram), remains open throughout the year, while Akkare Kottiyoor is a temporary sacred shrine that opens only during the famous Kottiyoor Vysakha Mahotsavam, a 28-day annual pilgrimage festival held between May and June.
The temple is surrounded by dense forest, natural streams, and a sacred grove, creating a spiritually powerful atmosphere. Unlike many grand temple structures, the main ritual site at Akkare Kottiyoor is simple and deeply connected to nature, symbolizing ancient Vedic traditions. Thousands of devotees from Kerala, Karnataka, and other states visit during the festival to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings.
